It’s June! Gosh, where did that come from? Because of everything that’s going on I completely missed April, and May was just a huge blur. So I’ve been puttering along…working here, playing with Chelsea there, reading, drinking hot tea and working on future things.

A picture of Chelsea…you know, just because.

In the meantime I’ve been trying to figure out what on earth to do with this blog. I’ve had half ideas and not taken time to write any full posts. (That’s good though…now I have a few ideas to start with).

I think this blog will be about 3 things though. There will be some personal things, I’ll write about music (violinist! Can’t help it…), but I’ll mostly write about marketing.

There is a lot of information out there about how our economy is changing from being corporate driven to being self-employed. There’s a great article here about How To Lead Millenials. I always read these kinds of things thinking that I’m so different and don’t fit into stereotypes…boy was I wrong on this one!

One point that stuck out to me was this:

“Millenials are not as interested in “climbing the corporate ladder.” But instead more concerned about making a difference and leaving their mark.”

What do we do instead of climbing the corporate ladder? We start our own businesses! We write books! We blog and travel! And if you’re going to do your own thing, you need a little marketing know-how.

Marketing isn’t negative like how people will often think about advertising. Marketing is about the entire look of your company, including the advertising. It’s necessary now if you want to be noticed — especially online. What’s your message? Your tone? Do have a website (I’m not answering that)?

Marketing isn’t a science though, it’s an art. I could make this blog about how to do things and why to do them, give you someone’s research and call it done. But I don’t think that’s very true-to-life. I read once, I forget who from, that anyone who calls themselves a “social media expert” isn’t really an expert. Because it’s constantly changing! And different things work for different people, different products, and in different times. You compile all that research and present it to your clients…

Instead, I’d like to share ideas on marketing yourself — your music, your movie, your small business. Things I know. Interesting things I’ve found. What I think about current marketing — why something works or doesn’t work.

I hope you find it useful and interesting. I hope you don’t hate it and leave a mean comment (though I expect some..not necessarily from the few of you reading this post now).

And I’m telling you this so you can leave comments, tell me to post, and let me know if you want to know anything. Like: why is Google+ still here? (I don’t know yet either…working on it!)
